Statement of Purpose:

In an effort to fulfill Walters State's mission to provide affordable, quality higher education opportunities to the residents of upper East Tennessee, the Enrollment Development and Retention Services Department assists potential students with the college enrollment process and current students with meeting their educational goals.  The department is responsible for planning and coordinating student marketing and recruiting activities, making initial contacts with prospective students, providing pre-admission counseling, and providing educational program information to high schools and area industries throughout the counties of Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Sevier, and Union.  The department also recruits and serves adult students who have delayed or interrupted their college education.

Enrollment Development and Retention Services maintains a close relationship with service area public school officials by working directly with directors of schools, Board of Education/central office supervisors, and high school, middle, and elementary school principals, counselors, and teachers.  The department collaborates with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, WIA career centers, area business and industry establishments, the Educational Opportunity Center and similar agencies, adult education centers, and academic and administrative units within the college in coordinating efforts to better server the adult student population.

Additionally, Enrollment Development and Retention Services assists students who need one-on-one attention while enrolled at the college and those struggling with issues that could interfere with their attendance and/or progress at Walters State.  This office provides student support services focused on student retention and serves as a liaison between students and faulty/staff members on campus.  Students who are experiencing academic, personal or financial difficulties and those considering dropping out of college are encouraged to visit Enrollment Development and Retention Services.
