Baseball Powers Past Southwest Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — The second-ranked Walters State baseball team played their own version of Home Run Derby Saturday, belting six of them in a twinbill sweep of Southwest Tennessee.

 

In the first game, sophomore outfielder Adam Milligan smacked three solo homers as the Senators rolled to a 7-2 win. The second game saw freshman slugger Dylan Pratt bash a three-run homer as Walters State netted a 5-3 decision.

 

With the doubleheader sweep, the Senators pushed their winning streak to six games and are 17-3 overall, 9-0 in the TJCCAA.

 

The first game saw Walters State put on a power show in the first inning off losing hurler Nick Purcell. With one out, Cody Hawn, Pratt and Milligan walloped back-to-back-to-back homers to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

 

Milligan added his second and third round-trippers of the contest in the third and fifth innings. Pratt delivered the final two runs in the contest with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and a run-scoring single in the seventh.

 

Freshman Chad Hunter doubled and singled for the winners, Hawn and Pratt each finished with two hits while freshman Kyle Koeneman doubled.

 

Sophomore righthander Nick Fuller (3-1) went the distance, allowing two unearned runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one.

 

The second game saw Hunter and Hawn smack consecutive singles to start the first inning in front of Pratt’s 10th homer of the season off losing hurler Justin Wright.

 

Walters State added RBI singles by freshman Alex McClure in the sixth and sophomore Nick Langley in the seventh to secure the victory.

 

Pratt and Langley each had two singles in the second game for the Senators.

Sophomore righthander David Francis (4-1) tossed a complete-game with 12 strikeouts. Francis gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking four.

 

Walters State returns to action Friday, March 7 at home against TJCCAA rival Hiwassee. Scheduled start time is 2 p.m.
