Baseball Slams Tompkins Courtland
MORRISTOWN, Tennessee – Freshman outfielder Will Skinner wielded the heavy aluminum Thursday as the second-ranked Walters State baseball team swept a doubleheader from Tompkins Cortland (N.Y.) at Senator Field.
Skinner collected six extra-base hits (five doubles, one homer) while scoring seven runs as the Senators cruised to wins by the scores of 27-0 and 12-1 in five innings. With the twinbill sweep, Walters State is 24-4 on the season.
The victory in the first game gave veteran Walters State coach Ken Campbell his 400th win at the school. Campbell is now 401-94-1.
In the first game, freshman outfielder Dylan Pratt belted three doubles, a single and a homer, driving in four runs while scoring three. Skinner added three doubles and four runs scored while freshman Cody Hawn and sophomore Nick Langley each had two singles and a double.
Sophomore outfielder Adam Milligan singled three times, freshman outfielder Chad Hunter homered and doubled, driving in six runs while freshman Jon Dalton doubled and singled.
Freshman Spencer Clifft (1-0), the second of four Walters State hurlers, worked two innings to collect the win.
The second game saw Skinner finish with two doubles and a homer, driving in three runs while scoring three. Freshman Kyle Koeneman singled twice, freshmen Brandon Chastain and Myles Cordell each homered while Milligan doubled.
Five Senator pitchers combined on a three-hitter with freshman Austin Bridgewater (2-1) netting the mound victory.
Walters State opens up a three-game TJCCAA series Friday at home against Cleveland State. Scheduled start time is 2 p.m.
