Baseball Splits With Vol State
GALLATIN, Tennessee — Freshman outfielder Chad Hunter’s two-run double snapped a 3-3 tie in the seventh and highlighted a six-run explosion as the second-ranked Walters State baseball squad dumped Volunteer State, 8-3, Saturday in the first game of a TJCCAA doubleheader.
In the second game, the Senators were held to two hits as the Pioneers posted a 5-3 win in a contest shortened to five innings due to inclement weather. With the twinbill split, Walters State is 30-6 overall and 16-3 in the conference while Volunteer State is 16-16, 6-10.
Freshman Kyle Koeneman’s RBI double knotted the count at 3-3 in the seventh inning of the first game. Hunter followed with his two-bagger that tallied a pair of runs.
Freshman Cody Hawn followed with a run-scoring single in front of Adam Stooksberry’s sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot. Stooksberry’s round-tripper extended Walters State’s streak of at least one homer in a game to 13.

Chad Bell went the distance to collect his seventh win of the season in eight decision. The freshman lefthander allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking four.
In the nightcap, the Senators were limited to a solo homer by Cody Hawn and a run-scoring single by sophomore Nick Langley. Freshman Will Skinner drove in the third run with a fielder’s choice.
Sophomore Nick Fuller (5-2) was tagged with the mound defeat. Fuller gave up five runs (three earned) on four hits while walking six and striking out six.
The Senators return to action Tuesday in an exhibition game against the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Park. Scheduled start time is 7:15 p.m.
