Baseball Sweeps Truett McConnell

MORRISTOWN, Tennessee – The No. 2 Walters State baseball team didn’t play their best Sunday afternoon. However, it was good enough to win a doubleheader against Truett-McConnell at Senator Field.

In the first game, the Senators exploded for nine runs in the first inning and never looked back in routing the Bears, 14-4, in five innings. The second game saw Walters State rally from a 6-0 deficit to net a 9-8 victory.

With the twinbill sweep, the Senators improved to 32-6 on the season while Truett-McConnell fell to 12-25.

The first game also saw Walters State’s streak of 14 straight game with at least one homer cone to an end. The home team didn’t need the longball to secure the win.

Freshmen Chad Hunter, Kyle Koeneman and Will Skinner each doubled and singled in the opener for the Senators. Sophomore Adam Stooksberry chipped in a double.

Freshman Chad Bell (8-1) went all five innings to record the mound decision. The former Knoxville South-Doyle standout gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking four.

In the second contest, the Bears tallied six runs in the opening inning and led 7-4 in the fifth when the Senators started their comeback.

Walters State took the lead at 8-7 on freshman Dylan Pratt’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. Truett-McConnell knotted the count at 8-8 in the top of the seventh.

The bottom half of the inning saw the Senators load the bases with no outs. The Bears recorded two outs but made a throwing error on the final play of the contest that allowed Koeneman to score the winning run.

Koeneman homered and singled twice for Walters State. Pratt chipped in a homer and a single while Stooksberry doubled and singled.

Sophomore David Francis (7-1) worked three innings, giving up one unearned run on one hits while striking out one.

The Senators return to action Tuesday at Senator Field when the Raiders of Roane State come to town for a twinbill. Scheduled start time is 1 p.m.
