Baseball Wins TJCCAA Regular Season Title

MORRISTOWN, Tennessee — Friday proved to be a big day for Walters State, the No. 2 ranked baseball team in the country.

 

The Senators clinched the TJCCAA regular season title with a 12-9 victory over Dyersburg State in the second game of a doubleheader at Senator Field. In addition to winning the title, the Senators tied the school record for most homers in a season (138).

 

Walters State is now 46-7 overall and 23-4 in the conference while the Eagles are 32-12, 20-7.

 

Freshman outfielder Dylan Pratt smacked a pair of homers, his 19th and 20th round-trippers of the season, in the second game. Pratt finished with three hits and five RBIs.

 

Freshman Cody Hawn homered, doubled and singled in the win, freshman Chad Hunter homered, singled and scored four runs. while sophomore Adam Milligan and freshman Jesse Wierzbicki each singled twice.

 

Milligan extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

 

Netting the mound win for the Senators was David Francis. The sophomore righthander, now 10-1 on the season, allowed nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings while striking out four and walking two. Fellow sophomore Coty Woods tossed the finished 2 1/3 innings to record his fourth save of the season.

 

In the opener, Walters State held an 8-4 advantage heading into the seventh inning. The Eagles put five runs on the board, including a grand slam from Phillip White.

 

Hunter led the Senators with a pair of singles and a homer in the first game. Sophomore Nick Langley doubled and singled, freshman Kyle Koeneman and Pratt each homered while Milligan tripled.

 

Freshman Austin Bridgewater (4-2) was tagged with the mound loss in relief of starter Chad Bell.
