Senators One Win From Tournament Crown

COLUMBIA, Tennessee — Walters State freshman first baseman Kyle Koeneman broke the school record for homers in a season Tuesday with his 27th round-tripper of the season in a 6-5 win over Cleveland State in the NJCAA Region VII tournament held at Columbia State.

With the win, the Senators are 51-7 and play for the crown Wednesday against Volunteer State. Walters State would have to drop both games to the Pioneers in order not to advance.

Koeneman’s record-breaking 27th homer, which broke the old mark of 26 by Tary Scott (1984) and Greg Ehmig (1985), came in the eighth inning off Cleveland State reliever Zach Lawson. Koeneman’s homer knotted the count at 5-5.

Later in the inning, freshman Chad Hunter’s two-out single scored Jesse Wierzbicki with the game-winning run.

Sophomore outfielder Adam Milligan doubled twice, pushing his hitting streak to 22 games, for Walters State. Freshman Cody Hawn doubled and singled, Hunter added two singles while Adam Stooksberry and Dylan Pratt each doubled.

Austin Bridgewater (5-2) retired all four batters he faced to earn the mound win in relief of starter Spencer Clifft, who pitched 7 2/3 innings and allowed only 3 earned runs on 5 hits.
