Senators Take Two From Wilkes
NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. — Freshman Cody Hawn went 3-for-5 with two homers, including a grand slam, and drove in seven runs as the No. 3 Walters State baseball team clobbered Wilkes, 24-8, in five innings in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.
In the second game, sophomore outfielder Adam Milligan’s RBI single in the seventh inning snapped a 5-5 deadlock and gave the Senators a 6-5 victory.
With the twinbill sweep, Walters State moved to 40-6 on the season while Wilkes fell to 12-27.
In addition to Hawn’s monster night in the opener, sophomore Adam Stooksberry singled twice and homered while Dylan Pratt also homered.
Milligan chipped in a pair of singles while Jesse Wierzbicki doubled.
Sophomore Jack Snodgrass (5-0) allowed eight runs (five earned) on six hits while striking out seven and walking two in four innings. Freshman Jesse Brown pitched the final inning.
The second contest saw the Senators with a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth when Wilkes tallied three times to pull even.
Walters State took the lead for good in the seventh when Milligan’s single plated pinch runner Adam Ray.
Stooksberry led the Senators with a double and a single while Milligan finished with two singles. Freshman Chad Hunter added a two-bagger in the victory.
Sophomore Coty Woods (5-1) picked up the mound win in relief of starter Spencer Clifft. Freshman Austin Bridgewater worked the final inning to capture his first save of the season.
Walters State returns to action Friday when they begin a three-game TJCCAA series at Motlow State. Scheduled start time is 3 p.m.
