Diamond Senators Bash Cougars Twice
MORRISTOWN, Tennessee – The Walters State baseball team took out their anger after losing to Cleveland State Friday by sweeping TJCCAA twinbill Saturday against the Cougars at Senator Field.
In the first game, Walters State bashed four homers to back the pitching of freshman Chad Bell in a 13-1 win in five innings. The second game saw the Senators storm back from a 6-1 deficit to collect a 13-7 triumph.
With the doubleheader sweep, Walters State is 26-5 overall and 14-2 in the conference while Cleveland State fell to 19-11, 7-7.
The first game saw freshmen Dylan Pratt (12th), Kyle Koeneman (sixth), Jesse Wierzbicki (fifth) and Will Skinner (fourth) each clear the fence with Koeneman’s three-run blast in the fifth invoking the slaughter rule.
Skinner added a single to go along with his round-tripper for the Senators. Freshman Cody Hawn doubled and singled while freshman Chad Hunter and sophomore Adam Milligan each singled twice.
Bell, who improved his record to 6-1, gave up one run on six hits in five innings. The lefthander struck out two and walked one.
In the second game, Walters State erased a 6-1 deficit after two innings to earn the sweep of the doubleheader.
Milligan led the offensive attack with three singles and a double for the Senators. Sophomores Adam Stooksberry (fifth) and Nick Langley (first) homered and singled, Wierzbicki and Skinner each doubled and singled while Hunter singled twice.
In the three-game series with the Cougars, Hunter recorded five stolen bases.
Sophomore Nick Fuller went the distance in pushing his worksheet to 5-1 on the season. The righthander gave up seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits while striking out seven and walking two.
Walters State returns to action Monday in a home contest against Tusculum College’s junior varsity. Scheduled start time is 2:30 p.m.
