Pitching Lifts Baseball To Win At Southwest
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Behind a stellar pitching performance from Chad Bell and Coty Woods, the second-ranked Walters State baseball team won the first game of a three-game set with Southwest Tennessee, 4-1, Friday afternoon.
With the victory, the Senators extended their winning streak to four games and improved to 15-3 overall, 7-0 in the TJCCAA.
Bell, now 4-0 on the season, worked 6 1/3 innings, giving up one runs on nine hits while striking out eight. Woods went the rest of the way to earn his first save of the season. The sophomore righthander gave up one hit and fanned five batters.
With the score knotted at 1 in the seventh, freshman Alex McClure led off with a triple off losing hurler Colby Fitzpatrick. Two batters later, freshman Cody Hawn doubled home McClure with the go-ahead run.
In the ninth, freshman Chad Hunter added some insurance for the visitors with a two-run homer, his fourth of the season.
Hawn and McClure each had two hits in the win for Walters State.
The Senators conclude their three-game series with Southwest Tennessee with a doubleheader Saturday. Scheduled start time is 1 p.m.
