Senators Fall In Smoky Mountain Showdown
SEVIERVILLE, Tennessee – The big bat of Kyle Reynolds (three hits with a homer) and five Walters State errors led to the downfall of the Senators, 9-1, Tuesday night in the third annual Smoky Mountain Showdown against the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Park.
Walters State’s lone run came in the fourth inning off the Smokies’ Jeff Samardzija, the highly-touted prospect of the Chicago Cubs. Cody Hawn and Adam Stooksberry laced back-to-back singles before sophomore Adam Milligan ripped a triple that scored Hawn.
Freshman Jesse Wierzbicki had the other hit for the Senators, a single in the second inning. Sophomore righthander David Francis was tagged with the mound loss, giving up four unearned runs in two innings. Chad Bell, Jack Snodgrass and Coty Woods worked in relief of Francis.
Tennessee starter Donnie Veal went two innings to earn the mound victory. Veal gave up one hit while five relievers scattered three hits over the final five innings.
Walters State returns to action Friday when Truett-McConnell comes to Morristown for a three-game series at Senator Field. Scheduled start time is 2 p.m.
