Lady Senators Collect Road Win At Hiwassee
MADISONVILLE, Tennessee – The No. 18 Walters State women's basketball team used a stellar defensive effort en route to a 61-37 victory Wednesday night over TJCCAA Eastern Division rival Hiwassee.
With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 21-4 overall and 9-2 in conference action while the Lady Tigers fell to 10-9, 5-6.
In the contest, Walters State held Hiwassee to 23.9 percent shooting from the field, including a frigid 3-of-23 (13 percent) in the final 20 minutes of action. The Lady Senators also forced a staggering 28 turnovers.
Freshman guard Rhon'Neisha Taylor led Walters State in scoring for the third consecutive game as she tallied 16 points. The Nashville native added seven rebounds and six steals. Sophomore center Nakisha Strickland (Chattanooga) added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Senators were 23-of-59 from the field (1-of-6 on 3-pointers) for 39 percent while hitting 14-of-22 free throws. Walters State also won the battle on the boards, 43-21.
Hiwassee was led by Samantha Avery with 11 points.
Walters State returns to action Saturday at home against TJCCAA Eastern Division power Chattanooga State, one of the four teams that holds a victory over the Lady Senators. Scheduled start time at 'Z' Buda Gymnasium is 2 p.m.
