Information
The Associate of Science degree at Walters State Community College is intended to fulfill the freshman, sophomore level general education
and introductory mathematics courses required in a four-year bachelor’s
degree. It is a transfer degree; however, the curriculum is not designed for
transfer to any particular college or university. Students will need to
consult a faculty advisor to determine specific transfer requirements by
school. The link to Walter State’s Mathematics Division is:

Career and Major Information:
Mathematicians use mathematical theory, computational
techniques, algorithms, and the latest computer technology to solve economic,
scientific,
engineering, physics, and business problems. The work of
mathematicians falls into two broad classes — theoretical (pure) mathematics
and applied mathematics. These classes, however, are not sharply defined, and
often overlap.
Statistics is the scientific application of mathematical
principles to the collection, analysis, and presentation of numerical data.
Statisticians contribute to scientific inquiry by applying their mathematical
and statistical knowledge to the design of surveys and experiments; collection,
processing, and analysis of data; and interpretation of the results
(Occupational Outlook Handbook 2004-2005).
