Walters State's two-year concentration in Greenhouse
Management is designed to prepare successful
graduates for entry-level employment in the field of greenhouse production and
management and landscaping. Duties may
primarily include the business aspects of running a business that grows and
provides trees, shrubs, flowers, ornamental plants, and vegetables for sale,
such as hiring and supervising workers, establishing output goals, determining
financial constraints, monitoring production and marketing, determining
inventory transportation and storage requirements, and overseeing maintenance
of the property and equipment. Managers will also choose which types of plants
to grow based on environmental and marketing factors as well as what types of
growing environments (greenhouse, hothouse, or natural) their chosen plants
will require. The selection and purchase of seeds, fertilizers/nutrients, and
chemicals to prevent and treat plant diseases is also typically a managerial
duty. Along with the growing and landscaping services, they may also be
responsible for educating customers on proper planting and care techniques.
Jobs may be found in many areas of business and industry as
well as in private growing and landscaping businesses.
The minimum educational requirement is a high school
diploma, but postsecondary education and training will be helpful for
advancement. Minimal growth is expected in this occupation through the year
2012.

lists the salary range for a beginning-level position in this field in
Tennessee as $20,015 to $26,875 annually. With experience, the range increases
to $27,580 to $38,250. The national average is higher by about $4,000 per
year. Salary figures quoted are based on national figures. Local or regional
salaries may be lower.
