Walters State's two-year concentration in Hotel and
Restaurant Management is designed to prepare successful graduates for
management positions in the field. Managers in the hotel and restaurant
industry are generally responsible for keeping their establishment efficient
and profitable while maximizing comfort of guests. This includes overseeing
many aspects of the business including staffing and personnel, accounting,
purchasing, and customer service.
A hotel manager is responsible for coordinating
registration, housekeeping, and maintenance activities, and may also coordinate
special events, banquets, or conventions. This person will also decide on and
arrange for outside services such as deliveries, laundry, trash collection,
maintenance, and repairs.
A restaurant manager must carefully observe food
preparation, and may be responsible for ordering appropriate amounts of food
and ensuring quality of inventory as well as coordinating and maintaining
menus. Additionally, they are responsible for maintaining sanitation standards
in the kitchen and dining areas. Restaurant managers will also decide on and
arrange for outside services such as deliveries, laundry, trash collection,
maintenance, and repairs.
Jobs may be found in both large corporations and small
private businesses with greater concentration of jobs in tourist areas.
Through the year 2012, restaurant manager positions are expected to increase at
an average rate, and hotel manager positions are expected to increase more
slowly than average.
Earnings:
The Tennessee Career Information Delivery
System website lists the salary range for a beginning-level position in this
field in Tennessee as $20,580 to $29,980 annually. With experience, the range
increases to $29,190 to $49,785. The national average is significantly higher
for hotel management, but only slightly higher for restaurant management.
