Senators Basketball

The Senators will have a young team this season, but their recruiting class features some top talent from local high schools as well as players from across the region.

Four sophomores return to lead Bill Carlyle’s squad. At guard, former Knox Halls standout Kyle Yates and Science Hill’s Landon Breeding are back for a second season. Larry Coleman of Ripley returns at forward. And at the post, Memphis Westwood’s Jason Smith is back.

Five guards signed to play for the Senators this year. They are Jerry Nichols of Memphis Westwood; Chattanooga Hixson’s Brian Duniga; Spartanburg Dorman’s Joshua Walker; Jonathan Clemons of Powell Valley; and Soddy Daisy’s Reggie Johnson. Corey Wade of Chattanooga Central and Franklin County’s Ike Jones will play at forward. At the post, the Senators add Adam Ruffin, from Auburn, Ala.; Miles Park, North Carolina’s Jamaine Burke and Michael Mullins of Morristown West.

Lady Senators Basketball

Five returning sophomores and ten freshmen will try to carry on the winning tradition of Lady Senators basketball as Walters State attempts to defend its TJCCAA Eastern Division Championship.

Head coach Dave Kragel’s team will have four experienced guards. They are Keisha Stewart of Memphis, Eau Claire, South Carolina’s Tyoka Hollins; Franklin Road Academy’s Jessica Brown; and Cyndie Troutman from Hampton. Sophomore Rochelle Widener of Knoxville will once again occupy a spot on the low post for the Lady Senators.

Backcourt signees include Jessica Northern of Morristown East; Chanda Parker from Morristown West; South Carolina native Charlena Martin; South Greene’s Shree Renner; Latia Love of Lebannon High School; and William Blount’s Andrea Clapp.

In addition to the speed that Walters State was able to add in the backcourt, they were also able to add some size in the frontcourt. The big players are Meredith Grant, who joins the Lady Senators after a successful career at Paige High School; Baltimore Maryland’s Crystal Falline; and Elexis Smith who comes to Walters State from Cherokee, N.C.
