Baseball ranked No. 4 in two national pre-season polls
The Walters State Senators began the season as the No. 4 team in the nation, according to two prestigious preseason polls. The Senators received the distinction in both the NJCAA’s Division I coaches’ poll and in the Feb. 4-17 edition of Baseball America magazine.
“Our program is getting some recognition. Now it is up to us to live up to it by getting the job done on the playing field,” said head coach Ken Campbell, who has won the TJCCAA Eastern Division Coach of the Year award in each of his first two seasons at Walters State.
The Senators finished the 2001 season with a 44-10 record, tying the all-time school record for victories and winning the TJCCAA Eastern Division. The team also climbed as high as No. 4 in the nation in the NJCAA poll during the season last year. The season began Feb. 14. As The Hub went to press, the Senators were 11-1. Softball blends veterans with excellent recruiting class
The Walters State Lady Senators began their softball season on Feb. 26 with five returning sophomores and seven freshmen.
Head coach Larry Sauceman is happy with his latest recruiting class and believes they blend nicely with his veterans.
“We have a lot of talent this year. We’ll have a solid lineup and may have the best pitching we’ve had in my five seasons here,”
Sauceman said. Last season, the Lady Senators finished with a 27-15 record and a third place finish in the TJCCAA Eastern Division.
Golf looks to return to the national tournament for second straight year
The Walters State Senators hope to defend last year’s regional golf championship and earn a second straight trip to the NJCAA
Division II Tournament. Several key players are back from the squad that finished 11th overall in last year’s national tournament. This year’s group has already played very well against tough competition in the fall schedule. The team won the Smoky Mountain Invitational, finished second at the Cleveland Invitational, third in the Wingate Invitational, and fourth at the Mars Hill Invitational.
