Flamenco Vivo / Carlota Santana
Niswonger Performing Arts Center

Reserve a free ticket

Poema de Andalucía is a journey through the cultural richness and traditions of the Andalusian provinces that form the “cradle of flamenco.”  Despite their proximity, many stylistic differences exist between the regions of southern Spain. The varied traditions, festivals and rituals of daily life reflect the special character of its people and have made the Andalusian region a wellspring of cultural heritage, not just for dance and song but for poetry, art and literature. Through the language of flamenco, this special ‘Poem’ pays tribute to the unique land and people of Andalucía.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is the nation’s premier Spanish and flamenco dance company, known for the purity of its work and the unique way in which it enriches the art of flamenco. Flamenco Vivo actively encourages the creativity and innovation of young artists from both Spain and the U.S. while remaining faithful to its powerful traditions.

Master Class offered Monday, February 6 at 6:00 p.m.

There is limited space for a free master class on Monday, February 6 at 6:00 p.m. in the Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville. If you are interested in being a participant or even a spectator, contact the business office at 423-638-1328. Participants will be registered on a first come-first served basis.

Flamenco Vivo/Carlota Santana offers classes that range from beginners to advanced levels. All classes increase the participant's awareness and understanding of flamenco dance and its cultural heritage. The classes include a brief history of the origins of flamenco dance, music and song and how the various cultures that inhabited Spain have influenced flamenco. This is a hands-on workshop with instruction in rhythmic handclaps (palmas), arm movements (braceo), body posturing, and footwork (taconeo). The class is supportive and fun, and flamenco technique is woven into a short choreography. By the end of the class the participants will be able to “perform” a simple choreographed dance.

A Woman Called Truth
One Act, 50 Minute Play, by The WordPlayers

A Woman Called Trutgh

A Woman Called Truth is a story of the life and achievements of Sojourner Truth. The play begins at the 1851 women’s rights convention in Akron, Ohio. We then go back in time to 1797 and travel with Sojourner as she remembers some of the extraordinary experiences that shaped her life. We get a glimpse of her highly cruel and unjust treatment as a slave. We experience how she bravely took her freedom and how she fought to free her son. At the end of the play, we learn how she became “Sojourner Truth” and get a taste of her dynamic spirit as an orator as she delivers her famous “Ain’t I a Woman” speech.
