Catalog Description:

Experiencing art – form, meaning and history in visual arts.  Lecture-discussion.  Especially for non-majors.

Course objectives:

 

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able:

 

  1. to develop basic vocabulary in aesthetics.
  2. to increase the student’s ability to use appropriate terminology when engaging in critical analysis of visual images
  3. to assess the impact of visual images on contemporary (selected representative) and past societies.
  4. to identify subject areas and their iconographical meaning and impacts.
  5. to construct understanding of technical procedures used in manipulation of standard art media.
  6. to develop visual senses.
  7. to explore rhythm, balance, emphasis, variety, unity and proportion as standard artistic means of expression.
  8. to learn strategies of two-dimensional plane designs that integrate line, shape, form, color, value, texture.
  9. to instill the values of roles in the art world through gallery and museum visits.
  10. to relate the effects of censorship.

 

General Education Course Designation:  Humanities (3 semester hours)

 

Instructional and Evaluation Methods:

The student must become familiar with the slides and objects presented in class plus participate in class discussions and attend all special events sponsored by the Art Department.  This is a lecture course.  Audio visuals are used to enhance the students’ awareness of provenance and stylistic import of selected works of visual art.

 

Instructional and Evaluation Method:

50% of final grade is based on test scores.  Three tests must be taken by the student with the lowest

score dropped.

 

25% of final grade is based on a written presentation, topics to be assigned by instructor.  These papers must be typewritten and use standard college English.  Papers should reference two sources and contain 800 words.

 

25% of final grade consists of documented attendance at three approved venues of visual art, museums, galleries, or artist studios.

 

A student must attend 80% of the classes to get a passing grade.

Course Ground Rules:

Students should attend the first day of class or contact the instructor prior to the first class.  Failure to do this may result in being dropped from the class.

 

Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited.

Students receiving any type of financial aid or scholarship should contact the Financial Aid Office before making any changes to their schedule.  Schedule changes without prior approval may result in loss of award for the current term and future terms.

 

Students who have not paid fees on time and/or are not correctly registered for this class and whose names do not appear on official class rolls generated by the Admissions and Records office will not receive credit for this course.

 

Cellular phone use during classroom instruction is prohibited. Cellular phones must be turned to the non-audible mode until after class, at which time calls can be received or checked. (See The Walters State Catalog/Student Handbook.)

 

Regular class attendance is a student’s obligation.  (See the Walters State Catalog/Student Handbook)  If for some reason a student misses class, it is his or her responsibility to see the instructor regarding missed assignments and/or activities and to be prepared for the next class.  Excessive absences may substantially lower the semester grade.  The college requires the instructor to keep accurate records and to report when students are not attending class.

 

Humanities Building regulations strictly prohibit food, drink and tobacco products in the classroom.
