Academic Deans (Duties)
Administrative duties
1. Develop divisional goals and objectives with
division staff which are supportive of the goals and
objectives of the college.
2. Interpret and implement the educational
philosophy of the college within the division.
3. Coordinate the work of the division.
4. Call and preside over division meetings, and
appoint such committees as needed.
5. Prepare, with the assistance of division
staff, the budget requests for each fiscal year in consultation
with
the vice president for Academic Affairs.
6. Review and recommend requisitions for
purchase of supplies and equipment, requisitions for travel, and
other uses of budgetary funds.
7. Assume responsibility for all equipment
assigned to the division.
8. Oversee and recommend policies, procedures,
and needs for custodial care and maintenance of
physical facilities for instruction, work, or
study within the division.
9. Serve as a member of the division deans
committee.
10. Serve on other committees as appointed by
the vice president for Academic Affairs or the president.
11. Assist new faculty members in the
interpretation of divisional and institutional policy.
12. Serve in a liaison capacity between students
and faculty members to promote appropriate in class
behavior.
13. Listen to student complaints and act as a
liaison between student, faculty member, and the vice
president for Academic Affairs and Student
Affairs on conflict resolution.
14. Perform such other duties as may be assigned
by the vice president for Academic Affairs or president.
Instructional duties
1. Teach a reasonable load per semester in
consideration of additional responsibilities.
2. Develop the semester schedule of day classes
of the departments within the division and recommend
maximum class size with the assistance of the
division staff.
3. Assign classes to instructors and make
necessary adjustments.
4. Recommend course offerings to the dean of
Academic Access and work closely with the
dean in determining course development,
scheduling of classes and teaching personnel for Evening and
Distance Education.
5. Recommend adoption and purchase of textbooks
for each course offering in collaboration with the
professional staff.
6. Cooperate with all other areas of the college
to facilitate an overall effective program.
7. Initiate, organize, and direct programs of
professional growth for members of the division.
8. Carry out continuous program and
instructional evaluation.
9. Compile, interpret, and share information
provided through instructional research.
10. Coordinate the development and use of
departmental exams and standardized tests when such use is
feasible and beneficial.
Curriculum duties
1. Develop and recommend to the Curricular
Subcommittee and Academic Affairs Committee new courses
and programs of study. Recommend modification or
discontinuance of courses or programs of study.
2. Serve in liaison capacity between faculty
members and the vice president for Academic Affairs.
3. Develop college course syllabi and store
copies of final examinations.
4. Serve as a resource person to the personnel
of the Library in the selection, development, and
distribution of resource materials pertaining to
their division.
5. Attend pertinent regional and national
professional organization meetings.
6. Assist in preparation of proposals for
special federal, state and private projects and grants.
7. Assist the Counseling Office in advising
students with general or special problems related to the
division.
Personnel duties
1. Recommend needed positions and define faculty
needed, indicating qualifications and skills necessary
for maintenance of an adequate staff for
implementing the program of the division.
2. Participate in recruiting full-time and
part-time faculty for the division by reviewing credentials,
interviewing applicants, and recommending to the
vice president for Academic Affairs those best
qualified for the position.
3. Carry out periodic faculty evaluations and
conferences with faculty under their immediate supervision
pointing out deficiencies and making suggestions
for improvements, as well as recommendations for
next year’s budget preparation, promotions,
salary increases, retention, or dismissal.
4. Carry out the provisions of the institution’s
Affirmative Action Plan for appropriate personnel actions and
ensure equal opportunity without regard to race,
color, religion, sex, age or national origin.
Dean of Mathematics
The dean of Mathematics is responsible for the
academic programs in Mathematics under the
supervision of the vice president for Academic
Affairs. The dean of Mathematics works with the faculty in the
development of course content, revision of
courses or programs and the educational process. The dean also
assists the vice president for Academic Affairs
in the preparation of a course schedule and faculty teaching
schedule. The dean has specific administrative,
instructional, curriculum, and personnel duties common to
all academic deans. These duties are outlined in
Section 02:04:15.
