S.T.A.R. Leadership Offered in Cocke County
July 13, 2012

Walters State’s Division of Community Education plans to offer the customized corporate S*T*A*R Leadership Program in Cocke County beginning Aug. 8. This advanced training will meet one day each month, with the last meeting July 10, 2013. Meetings are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Newport Utilities Board Community Room.

This program has become one of the most popular leadership programs in Tennessee. The acronym is formed from four principles of good business leaders: think strategically, act tactically, take action and get results.

Participants cover many topics key to leadership development and success, including communications, purposeful goals, cornerstones of teamwork, resolving conflict, time management and breaking down barriers, according to Dr. Anita Ricker, assistant dean of community education at Walters State.

S.T.A.R. Leadership is designed to provide measureable development and spaced repetition.

“The only thing that affects your customers are employees, and the only thing that affects your employees are your leaders. Make sure your leaders have the skills they need to motivate and manage,” Ricker said.

Each class includes lectures, interaction and role play. Participants are provided textbooks, handouts and lunch at each session. The cost for the year-long program is $2,495. The tuition can be paid in monthly installments.
