Basic Law Enforcement Officer Academy
Application Information 2010
Important note: To be considered for
admission to the academy, candidates must comply with all
guidelines and requirements set forth below. There are no
exceptions.

Incomplete applications will NOT be considered. This includes all of the following
applicable documents:

Walters State student application for
new students with $10.00 application fee (one-time,
non-refundable fee). Be sure to list your major as
BLEO on the Walters State Application. Students previously but not currently
enrolled must submit a Readmission application.

Report (good for 1 year)
- Proof of immunization with two doses of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines, administered on or after the first birthday.
Two exceptions: Students born before January 1, 1957,
are exempt. Students who have graduated from a
Tennessee public high school since 1978 are only required to
have proof of one shot; the second shot must be after 1980

Official copy of high school
transcript (and college, if applicable) and official
GED report, if applicable. Two official copies must be provided (one copy to the Office of Admissions
and one copy to the Basic Police Recruit School).
“Official copy” means that it must be sent directly from the
school attended to Walters State either in a sealed envelope
or by fax. The transcript request
form in the college application packet may be used to assist
you in this process. If you have a GED we will
still need a copy of your partial high school transcript.
- Copy of high school diploma, GED, & college diploma as applicable.
According to the rules of the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards & Training
Commission, Rule # 1110-2-03 (1) (C), one of the pre-employment requirements is
that the person must be a high school graduate or possess equivalent. No
waivers will be granted for minimum education requirements. Therefore, we will
not register anyone for the academy until we have proof of the GED, or regular high school diploma, or college diploma on file.

Criminal History Record Information Request (city/county of
residence)

Tennessee Criminal History Information Request Form must be
sent off. Cost of $29.00.
Note: Each student must arrange and
pay for his/her own physical and psychological examination prior
to the application deadline unless he/she is representing a
department. Both of these examinations must be administered by a
Tennessee licensed professional. The medical exams is valid for one year. Arrangements may be made through the
Walters State Division of Public Safety office for completing
the psychological examination if the student desires to do so.

Upon completion of the application
packet you may receive a letter of acceptance, however this is only
indicates an acceptance to Walters State Community College and not the Police
Academy. You will receive a call to set up an interview for the
academy approximately one week prior to the interview dates stated in the

Non-Law Enforcement Applicants
All non-law enforcement candidates
(those not sponsored by an agency) may be placed on standby if
the class is full with full time sworn officers.
Interviews
All non-law enforcement
candidates will be called for an interview a week prior to the
following dates:

Registration and Orientation Sessions
All candidates are required to attend a
registration and orientation session. These are held at the
Basic Law Enforcement Officer Academy located in the WSCC
Greeneville-Greene County Center at 215 College Street,
Greeneville, Tennessee.
All fees are due and payable at time of
registration. Students much have payment for $1,676.50 made out
to WSCC or have financial aid in place for registration.
Individuals from departments must have tuition checks of
$1,676.50 made payable to WSCC or a signed letter of intent to
pay from their respective agencies. Meals for the 8 weeks are an
additional $936.00 made out to Alpha Services.

General Information
Dress:
Students will be
issued two academy shirts and one T-shirts (for PT).
Students must wear the issued
academy shirts, dark blue slacks, white socks, and black shoes
while in training. (Students may purchase additional academy
shirts).
The T-shirts will
be worn for all physical training.
Appearance:
Students are
required to maintain a neat appearance with reference to hair
length and facial hair. No
facial hair will be permitted.
Firearms:
Each student must
furnish a weapon by Week #5 of the respective academy session.
All weapons be
semi-automatic, double-action pistols chambered in one of the
following calibers: 9mm / .40 caliber / .45 ACP / .357Sig.
Three magazines and a magazine
pouch are required for these weapons.
Ammunition is furnished by the
academy.
A duty
belt and a snap-down secure type holster (leather preferred;
nylon acceptable) must be furnished by the student.
Twelve-gauge
shotguns will be furnished by the academy.
Other materials:
Each student is to furnish
certain items of clothing and other materials for their personal use during the academy. See
Materials List.
College Credits:
Twenty-three semester hours of
college credit will be granted to each student successfully
completing the Basic Law Enforcement Officer Academy.
