Students must fill out an Application for Graduation with the Student Records Office. Please refer to the appropriate section of the College catalog for additional information relative to graduation.

Graduation Application Deadlines

If you want your graduation application reviewed and the results sent to you before the start of the term, you must submit your completed application to the Student Records Office no later than 4:30 PM on the established priority deadline date.

Receive a degree audit and see exactly what is needed for a degree or certificate before registering for fall semester.

Graduation Checklist

Students must meet the following requirements in order to receive a degree or certificate in the desired program of study

  • Complete all academic requirements of the selected degree/certificate program.
  • Grade Point Average (GPA) requirements
    Only college-level courses taken at Walters State are computed in the college GPA for graduation.
    • An overall GPA of 2.0* is required for degree and certificate programs.
    • *An overall GPA of 2.75 is required for Associate of Science in Teaching (AST) Students.
  • Apply for graduation by the deadlines listed above
    • Forms also available in the WS Student Records Office:: U127 SSB
  • Take the Exit Exam (not required for certificate programs).
  • AST Majors
  • Business Majors
  • All Holds must be resolved from your student account before graduation.
    (financial, missing items, traffic citations, etc.)
  • See your academic advisor for inquiries regarding course substitutions (if applicable).
  • Complete the cap and gown order form previously mailed to you.
    (If you plan to participate in the commencement ceremony)
    • Return the completed form to the Student Records Office before the deadline listed in the instructions.
  • If you have federal student loans, complete the Loan Exit Interview Process
    (select Tools and Resources).
    • An electronic confirmation of completion will be sent to the Financial Aid Office within three days. If you have questions, contact the WS Financial Aid Office at 423-585-6811.
  • Attend the Commencement Ceremony (Optional but strongly encouraged!)

If you are unable to complete all of these requirements by the end of the Semester you will need to reapply for graduation for a subsequent semester.

Cap and Gown

Cap and Gown Order Forms are mailed to students who have applied for graduation. If you plan to participate in the commencement ceremony, return the completed forms to the Student Records Office before the deadline listed in the mailing.
