MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The 18th ranked Walters State Senators spotted visiting Sinclair a 5-0 lead in the first inning but rallied to take a 13-10 victory over the Tartans at Senator Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Senators belted 13 hits in the contest, including six for extra bases, and the top five hitters in the lineup combined for 11 hits in the come-from-behind victory.
With the win, Walters State has won eight straight games to improve to 16-5 on the season, while the loss evens Sinclair’s record at 2-2.
Dathan Prewett, Elijah Sutherland and Austin Norrell had three hits each in the win for the Senators, with Prewett scoring four times, Norrell smacking a home run and driving in three runs and Sutherland adding two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Jake Farr also drove in three runs and recorded a hit, while James Fowlkes had a triple and three RBIs. Austin Taylor doubled and Reed Hayes had an RBI and a base hit in the win.
Taylor Huebner had three hits and drove in four runs for the Tartans, as they recorded nine hits in the contest. Sinclair took advantage of 10 walks and two hit batsmen to jump out to their early lead, but they could not hold on.
Brett Martin (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Senators after going 3.2 innings and allowing just one unearned run on one hit while fanning five batters. Colton Provey notched the save after allowing a hit in a scoreless ninth inning.
Austin Eads took the loss for the Tartans in relief. He surrendered four earned runs on five hits in just two-thirds of an inning of work.
Sinclair plated five runs in the first inning off Senators starting pitcher Will Carter, but WSCC began its comeback in the bottom of the first. Farr ripped a two-run single to begin the rally, and after the Tartans plated another run in the second, the Senators pulled within a run in the third. Sutherland belted an RBI double, Fowlkes added an RBI grounder and Norrell plated a run with a double to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Sinclair added another run in the fourth to make it 7-5, but WSCC finally pushed its way into the lead in the bottom of the frame. Sutherland plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, and Fowlkes gave the Senators the lead with a two-run triple. Norrell followed with an RBI single to make it 9-7.
The Tartans knotted the score in the fifth, but Walters State answered right back in the home half and took the lead for good. Hayes ripped an RBI single and scored on a grounder by Farr. Prewett later scored on a passed ball to make it 12-9.
Sinclair scored their final run in the sixth, but it was answered by Norrell with a solo home run to provide the final tally of the game.
The Senators will be back on the diamond Friday afternoon when they begin a three-game home TCCAA series with Volunteer State. First pitch of the 9-inning game is set for 2 p.m. with the series concluding Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
