Noncredit Classes Prepare You for Health Careers

The Walters State Division of Workforce Training plans courses that prepare individuals to serve as clinical medical assistants, phlebotomy technicians, certified nurse assistants, registered dental assistants and EKG/ECOG technicians. CPR-BLS for Health Care Providers is offered each month on all four campuses. The cost is $60.
•Clinical Medical Assistant – This class trains individuals to work closely with physicians. Students learn how to prepare patients for exams and treatment, how to perform routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing and other common medial office procedures. After the class, students may take the National Healthcare Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant certification exam.
MORRISTOWN CAMPUS: Cost: $2,659, includes all books and supplies. Dates: Feb. 20-May 24, meeting from 6-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and six Saturdays, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

•Phlebotomy Technician – Provides didactic and clinical instruction in venipuncture. Prepares students to collect blood specimens for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Course includes terminology, anatomy and physiology, blood collections procedures and hands-on training. A 15-hour lab rotation is optional but encouraged. Students completing the lab and classroom course may take the NHA Phlebotomy Certification Exam. Cost; $1,449.
MORRISTOWN CAMPUS: March 5-May 9, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30-9 p.m.
SEVIER COUNTY CAMPUS: May 15-May 7 on Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30-9 pm.
GREENEVILLE/GREENE COUNTY CAMPUS: Feb. 19-May 7, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m.
CLAIBORNE COUNTY CAMPUS: Jan 30-April 24, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-9 p.m.
 
•Certified Nursing Assistant – This class is approved by the state of Tennessee and those completing this class will be licensed certified nurse aids. This class teaches the skills needed to perform basic patient care. Certified Nurse Assistants help with meals and exercise, take vital signs, perform personal hygiene and recognize signs of illness.

SEVIER COUNTY CAMPUS: Feb. 12-April 30, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5-10 p.m.
MORRISTOWN CAMPUS: Feb. 12-April 30, Mondays and Wednesdays, 4-9 p.m.
HANCOCK COUNTY (at Hancock Manor): March 6-May 31, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5-10 p.m. 

•EKG/ECOG Technician Course – Students receive instruction in the anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical terminology, and ECG strip analysis. This course also includes the operation of an ECG/EKG unit, interpretation and troubleshooting, lead placement and plotting. Upon completion, students will be eligible to take the NHA EKG/ECOG Certification Exam. Cost: $549
