Phlebotomy, CNA Classes Planned in Coming Months

Walters State’s noncredit healthcare courses train students for a new career in months, not years. Upcoming classes include certified nursing assistant and phlebotomy. Classes are regularly offered in CPR-BLS for healthcare providers and HeartsSaver First Aid, CPR, AED. Certified nursing assistants work under the supervision of a regular nurse. Duties include direct patient care, checking vital signs and reporting symptoms. This class prepares individuals to be licensed as a CNA in Tennessee. The cost is $799.
•Sneedville, Hancock Manor: Sept. 9-Nov. 26, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5-10 p.m.
•Morristown Campus, Aug. 13-Oct. 29, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-9 p.m.
•Niswonger Campus, Sept. 9-Nov. 21, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-9 p.m.

The phlebotomy technician course includes 70 hours of classroom training and 11 hours of clinical training. Students receive didactic and clinical instruction in venipuncture. Those who complete the program in good standing will be able to collect blood specimens from patients in a variety of settings. The class has an optional 15-hour clinical portion requiring 100 successful venipunctures (sticks) in a clinical environment. Students completing both the class and the externship will be eligible to take the NHA Phebotomy Technician Exam. The cost is $1,599.
