GALLATIN – The pendulum swung back to league play for the Walters State Senators and Lady Senators, and they chalked up two wins at Volunteer State Saturday. The Lady Senators won 74-57, and the men dominated the Pioneers 82-54.
Rhon’Neisha Taylor led all scorers with 21. She was 8-17 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers and 3-4 from the foul line. She also led the team in assists with five. Dana Garrett added 13 points. She and Taylor had six rebounds.
“This was a good effort by our team tonight,” said head coach Dave Kragel. “We rebounded well and played tough defense all night. Rhon’Neisha stepped up tonight and had a good game.”
Tranisha Benton led the Lady Pioneers with 18 points including three treys. Ashley Harris chipped in 10 points.
The Lady Senators improved to 10-2 while the Lady Pioneers fell to 2-8
Michael Jenkins and Terrance Britt posted double-doubles for the Senators. Jenkins had 17 points and 13 rebounds; Britt had 12 points and 10 assists. Laquantis Stewart showed his offensive ability. He picked up his third foul less than two minutes into the game and sat out the first half. He finished with 14 points and six rebounds.
“I think Laquantis showed some leadership tonight,” said head coach Bill Carlyle. “To sit out the entire first half and still play the way he did and not pick up another foul, showed heart. I thought we played hard tonight. This is a very talented ball club.”
The Senators improved to 11-1, and the Pioneers fell to 3-10.
The Lady Senators will play at home Saturday, Dec. 8 when they host the Lady Patriots of St. Catherine College in the “Z” Buda Assembly Hall and Gymnasium. The Senators play three non-conference games before meeting Saint Catherine in league play. They will host the Fighting Scots of Mary College at home. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Lady Senators start at 2 p.m. against St. Catherine and the men at 4 p.m.
