Basketball Sweeps Vol State

 The Lady Senators and Senators swept the Pioneers of Volunteer State on Wednesday.  The Lady Senators prevailed 74-50.  The Senators held on in the closing minuets and rallied for a 99-87 victory.  The Lady Senators improve to 16-3 and the Lady Pioneers fell to 4-11.  The Senators went to 17-1.  The Pioneers feel to 6-9.

Nakisha Strickland led the Lady Senators with 14 points.   She was 7-16 in the paint and collected six rebounds.  Jasmine Coleman chipped in 12 with a pair of 3-pointers, and Dana Garrett added 11 points.  Garrett also hauled in six boards.

“I thought we played well,” said head coach Dave Kragel.   I thought we moved the ball well, and we are still rebounding well.  We are getting there.”

Kaya Allen led all scorers with 17 points.  She was 7-12 from the floor and 3-4 from the free-throw line.  She had seven rebounds.  Alicia Lee had nine points with two 3-pointers.

AJ Thomas buried six 3-pointers and finished with 32 points, and two Senators finished with double-doubles. 

Thomas was 10-15 from the floor and 6-7 from the charity stripe.  Terrance Brit finished with 18 points and 10 assists, and Laquantis Stewart had 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Sirlester Martin was a point shy of a double-double with nine and had 12 rebounds.  Chris Talley added 12 points.

“This team is starting to gel,” said head coach Bill Carlyle.  “They are playing like a team.  Terrance is seeing the right people and he scored well tonight.  Chris shot the ball well.  This was a good team effort and a good win.”

DeAndre Reeves led Vol State with 23 points and hauled in nine rebounds.  He was 9-19 from the floor with five treys.  Justin Wilson and 21 points, and Brandon McGill had 19.   

Walters State will travel to Columbia State for a rematch with the Chargers.  They play at home again Wednesday Jan. 23 when they host the Cougars of Cleveland State.  The women play at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m. in the “Z” Buda assembly Hall and Gymnasium.
