Men & Women Down Columbia State

         The Walters State basketball teams picked up two conference wins against Columbia State Saturday in the “Z” Buda Assembly Hall and Gymnasium.  With the wins, the Lady Senators and Senators are 6-1 and 5-1 respectively.  Each team is 3-1 in conference play.

The Lady Senators beat the Lady Chargers 87-48.  Dana Garrett led the way with 15 points.  She was 5-11 from the floor and 5-6 from the foul line.  She also hauled in seven boards.  Nakisha Strickland had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.   Two freshmen made their presence known.  Brittany Mikels poured in 13 points.  Ashley Whitmore had eight points and nine rebounds.

“We were able to get a lot of players in,” said head coach Dave Kragel, “and get them some floor time.  We had some freshmen put up good numbers and we got a lot work done.”

Samantha Adams led all scorers with 16 points for the Lady Chargers.  Ashley Fields chipped in 14 points. 

The Senators beat the Chargers 83-64.  AJ Thomas led the Senators with 23 points.  He was 7-10 from the floor including three 3-point goals.  He was 6-7 from the free-throw line.   Laquantis Stewart and Sirlester Martin each had a double-double.  Stewart had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Martin chipped in 14 points and snagged 10 rebounds.  Terrance Britt had seven assists.

“This was a good game for us,” said head coach Bill Carlyle.  “We got a lot of things done that we have been working on in practice.  We knew Columbia would run at us and they did.  We just had to settle down and play our game.

Marrio Hunter led all scorers with 25, and the 11 rebounds gave him a double-double.  He was 10-18 with a trey from the floor and 5-8 from the charity stripe.   

The Lady Senators will play Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m.  They will host the Lady Cobras of Caldwell Community College.  The Senator will play at Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.
