Senators Clinch TJCCAA Eastern Division Title

 

MORRISTOWN, Tennessee – The No. 11 Walters State men's basketball team captured the TJCCAA Eastern Division title Wednesday night with a 90-82 victory over Hiwassee at 'Z' Buda Gymnasium.

 

With the win, the Senators extended their winning streak to 24 games, which is a school best. For the season, Walters State is now 27-1 overall and 14-1 in conference action.

 

The Senators had five players in double figures and two of those recorded double-doubles against the Tigers. Freshman forward Laquantis Stewart fired in 22 points while fellow freshman A.J. Thomas netted 20. Sophomore Freeman Pinkney chipped in 13 points, sophomore forward Sirlester Martin had 11 points and a team-high 15 rebounds while freshman forward Michael Jenkins tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds.

 

For the contest, Walters State was 29-of-63 from the floor (7-of-21 from 3-point range) for 46 percent while sinking 25-of-34 charity tosses.

 

Josh Noffiett gunned in a game-high 28 points for Hiwassee. Carl Taylor (five 3-pointers) and Alex Goldston each scored 16 points while Colton Forrest had 10.

 

Walters State concludes the regular season Saturday with a road game at Motlow State. Scheduled start time is 5 p.m.
