Degree: Associate of Applied Science
Emphasis: Management
Concentration: Accounting
Statement of Purpose
Walters State's two-year concentration in Accounting is designed to prepare successful
graduates for entry-level employment opportunities as paraprofessional in accounting.
The program recognizes the demand of accounting professionals and business owners
for employees who are proficiently trained in all areas of record keeping and account
reconciliation.
Why choose accounting as a
career? It's true not all positions in accounting involve catching mobsters like Al
Capone, but accounting does offer the highly motivated student a diverse and challenging
career in business and finance with the potential of significant rewards both financial
and personal.
The accounting environment is changing rapidly. Tennessee law now requires
candidates wishing to become certified public accountants to have 150 semester hours of
college education--the equivalent of five years at a college or university.
Not everyone can or is willing to devote so much time to a course of study.
Walters State has an alternative. Earn a two-year degree in Management with a
concentration in Accounting which prepares you to go to work immediately as a
paraprofessional in accounting offices and small businesses. And if you decide you
want to be a full professional accountant, you can easily continue your education at a
senior institution because approximately 70 percent of your coursework will transfer to
most colleges and universities.
A short investment of time will allow you to compete for a good job, gain valuable
on-the-job experience, and continue your education at some later date without excessive
course duplication or loss of credit.
