Salary Information
Walters State Community College offers Associate of Arts degrees in Art
Education, Art History, and Art Studio. These degrees are designed to fulfill
freshman and sophomore level course requirements of a bachelor’s degree; however,
the curricula are not specific for any one college or university. Students
will need to consult a faculty advisor at WSCC or an advisor at the intended
transfer institution for particular courses needed at an individual school.

Career and Major Information:
For a student with artistic talents, art education may be
a fulfilling career choice. The field often requires working with young people
and having effective communication skills. Assisting students in discovering
and developing an appreciation and talent for art while continuing to grow
artistically can be a rewarding endeavor. A willingness to relocate may
increase employment opportunities. An affinity for and understanding of child
and adolescent psychology and the ability to speak and write effectively are
necessary for this profession.
Fine artists communicate ideas, thoughts, and feelings
through artistic expressions, which may include painting, sculpting,
illustrating, work with ceramics, etc. A variety of materials can be used such
as oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, pencils, pen and ink, plaster, and
clay. Artists usually develop their skills through private lessons and perhaps
formal training obtained while pursuing a bachelors degree. According to the
Occupational Outlook Handbook 2002-2003 edition, keen competition is expected
for jobs in this field.
Students who major in art history may pursue a career as a
museum director or curator, an art critic, an art appraiser, or a buyer. A
graduate degree is often required for these positions.
