Career and Major Information:
Teachers greatly influence children’s lives by guiding their
personal, social, and intellectual development. Teachers stimulate thought
processes and reasoning by challenging and engaging student involvement in
learning. They act as guides and coaches to assist students in mastering the
subjects of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social science, and they
expose children to drawing, painting and music. All fifty states require that
public school teachers be licensed, and this requires completion of a
bachelor’s degree and a teacher education program. The job outlook for
teachers in the next ten years is very good due to the expected retirement of
many in the profession. Most elementary teachers instruct one class of
students in several subjects. Middle school and secondary teachers give more
in depth instruction in a particular subject.
