Walters State Community College, under the direction of the Tennessee Board of Regents, is required to assess students for readiness for college-level study and place them in coursework accordingly. Placement is dependent upon meeting certain academic standards, including achievement on the ACT/SAT/SAILS Math tests and prior college coursework. In accordance with Tennessee Board of Regents Policy 2.03.00.02, students without entrance placement scores and transfer coursework are automatically placed in Learning Support reading, writing, and mathematics.
Students with ACT/SAT and SAILS Math scores less than 5 years old that are below the minimum cut score and students without entrance placement scores may take the ACCUPLACER NG placement exam.
ACCUPLACER NG tests include texts and tasks students will likely encounter in first-year college courses, and the math content is more aligned to state college and career readiness standards.

The Reading test assesses the test taker's ability to derive meaning from a range of texts and to determine the meaning of words and phrases in short and extended contexts. Passages on the test cover a range of content areas, writing modes, and complexities. Both single and paired passages are included.
