Your Path to Success

The Student Success Advising Center supports students in the development of meaningful educational plans that are compatible with student’s education, career, and life goals. The Center assists students with academic advising, course scheduling, transfer plans, change of major, and resources for student success.

Academic advising is the process of students meeting with their academic advisor to determine educational goals and needed course work for their major. All students must meet with an academic advisor in order to register for courses.

New Student Advising

After being admitted to Walters State, regularly check your application status portal in order to complete all enrollment steps before meeting with an academic advisor. Your application status portal will prompt you to activate your MyWS and complete online New Student Orientation. After completing online New Student Orientation, you will be assigned an academic advisor, and you will receive a link and email to book your advising appointment. Please allow 1-2 business days after completing online Orientation to be assigned an advisor.

During a New Student Advising appointment, advisors will:

Help you decide the best path or major to complete your goals
Review your program of study and explain the prerequisites
Support you in developing an academic plan and choosing courses
Connect you to Walters State’s Student Support Services
Assist you in reviewing your MyWS alerts and admissions requirements
Guide you in registering for first-semester courses

Continuing Student Advising

Students will be notified in their MyWS alerts when to schedule an advising appointment for the upcoming semester. Registration opens the first Monday in November for spring semesters and the first Monday in April for Summer/Fall semesters. Students must be advised each semester in order to register for classes.

During the advising appointment, advisors will:

Discuss your academic history
Review your Degree Works and program of study
Discuss transfer opportunities
Connect you to Student Support Services
Assist you in reviewing your MyWS alerts
Guide you in creating a schedule and registering for courses for the upcoming semester
