Sherri Mahoney Jacobs, associate professor of English and advisor to Walters State’s Word Up English Up, practices slamming poetry on campus. Word Up will host their annual Poetry Slam on Nov. 20.

Poetry Slam Returns Nov. 20

The Walters State Poetry Slam will return to the Morristown Campus Nov. 20. Literary enthusiasts are invited to bring their best performance poetry and compete for prizes, including gift cards and the coveted black beret.
“Slam poetry takes poetry to another level,” Sheri Mahoney Jacobs, associate professor of English, said.  “This is more than just reading a poem. We bring the poem to life.”
The Walters State Poetry Slam is sponsored by Word Up, Walters State’s English Club. This will be held in the lobby of the R. Jack Fishman Library with a coffeehouse atmosphere.
“The event has been popular in the past with students and also community members,” Jacobs said. “People want to be involved in the contest and see others perform.”
Registration for those wanting to perform begins at 5 p.m. The slamming begins at 6 p.m. Poems and performances are judged on originality, audience engagement and performance.
